How the recording system works:

Step 1

Send us your song.

Step 2

We will produce the music.

Step 3

Receive the backing track.

Step 4

The final session.

Record a "scratch voice track" of yourself singing the song. We have provided a link below for FREE software you can use to record to your PC. If you don't play an instrument, a capella is fine. Once your recording is complete, simply attach the file to an email and send it to me. Note: The scratch vocal track is simply used as a "go by" and will not be heard in the final mix.

Once we have a rough draft of your song, we will begin production. The first task is an arrangement. The second task is deciding on the instrumentation you want in your song. If you don't have definite ideas of the sound you are after, I can help you in making instrumentation choices.

You will be able to hear clips of the work being done during production. This will insure that you are involved in all production decisions.

When the music is completely produced to your satisfaction it will be mixed. This mix will contain only the music (no vocal track) and will be sent to you via email in MP3 160kbps format.

You will also receive a version that includes the "scratch vocal" with the music. This is so that you (or the singer you choose) can learn the song arrangement before the final recording session.

Many of the artists I have worked with choose to record the final vocal performance at home on their PC. Others choose to take the music track to a recording studio in their area to add the final vocal track. This is the best option if you do not have good recording equipment and knowledge of digital recording.

Once the final vocal track has been recorded, the music and voice track are mixed, giving you a professional, quality, finished product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pre Production:

Can I submit songs with no accompaniment?
Yes, In fact, we prefer that you submit your material with only your voice (no music). If you play an instrument it is best that you record your instrument on a separate track from your voice and submit both tracks separately. It is a good practice to use a metronome when recording your scratch vocal track. Here is a free download.

Is sheet music required?
No. You only need to send a lyric sheet. The purpose of submitting is simply so we can hear your melody and lyrics.

What protection does recordyoursongs.com offer? Is it safe to submit?
Yes. U.S. copyright law states that a work is the property of the author upon completion. Email correspondence to/from recordyoursongs.com about your projects contain an unchangeable date (stamped by the email server). Keep copies of your emails and you will have proof of submission. In addition, we offer submission contracts upon request. (see our song submission page)

How do I submit my material for consideration?

There are 2 options for submitting material:
[Option 1] Sing and record your scratch vocal track to your PC and email an MP3 of that recording to recordyoursongs.com. This is the preferred method.
Download free voice recording software

[Option 2] If you can not record your voice to your PC, you may call our voice mail box and sing/record your voice. The purpose of the "scratch" or "draft" voice recording is simply so we can hear the melody and lyrics of the song. This recording will not be used in the actual backing track.

Production:

How is instrumentation decided for my project?
If you are a musician you probably already know what instrumentation you would like to hear in your studio backing track and we will discuss your needs during correspondence. If you don't know what you want, don't worry. We will be glad to guide you and help you make those decisions.

Will I be involved in other production decisions?
Yes. You will make all the decisions including key, tempo, feel, arrangement, etc. We will always have creative input, but you get to make all final choices.

Will I be able to hear samples of the work during the production process?
Yes. We will set up a web page that you may visit for that purpose.

What is the average turn-around time for projects?
1 to 3 weeks.

Can I add to or edit tracks after my project is completed?
Yes. Projects can always be updated.

Post Production:

How do I add my vocal performance to the studio backing track?

[Option 1] The best option is to simple take the music to a recording studio near where you live to perform your vocal track. This will yield the highest quality recording.

[Option 2] We do however have artists that prefer to record their vocal performance at home. This method requires some recording knowledge, recording software, a quality microphone and headphones.

What if I am not a singer?
Find a singer in your area to record the vocal performance for you. In some cases (depending on the project genre) we may be able to suggest a vocalist for you.

Mixing:

How is the final vocal performance mixed with the studio backing track?
We prefer that you send the vocal performance track to us for the final mix. However, you may opt to have the mix done at any studio.

Delivery:

How will I receive the finished product?
The mixed master of your project is delivered by internet download (MP3 format at 160kbps stereo high resolution).
If you would like the WAV file delivered on CD there is an addition charge of $10.00 US for shipping and handling.

OTHER COMMON QUESTIONS:

Do I need a fully produced demo to submit to music industry professionals?

The short answer: Yes

The long answer:
Yes. Finding somewhere to submit material is a task in itself. Don't waste an opportunity by submitting substandard recordings. Countless good songs end up in the trash heap simply because the writer failed to properly demo the material. If you don't believe in your work enough to invest in it, don't expect anyone else to either.

Another advantage to a good demo submission is that a ready to play track can be placed in TV, movies, videos, etc. If you have the right song at the right time, but a bad recording, another opportunity and $$$$ is lost.

Should I copyright my songs before submitting - and - what about the "poor mans copyright"?

Here is a good article on these subjects.
